Dandruff is an incredibly common condition that affects the scalp, resulting in small pieces of dry skin that flake off and end up in your hair — and eventually on your clothing. Aside from the obvious cosmetic issues it causes, persistent itching is another symptom that can make dandruff very uncomfortable.
So what causes dandruff?
For decades, it was widely assumed that dandruff was typically the result of poor hair hygiene, but this is not the case. Improper hair care may increase its severity, but the underlying causes appear to be very complex and difficult to pinpoint, according to researchers.
Symptoms of Dandruff
There are several symptoms when detecting dandruff, including:
- Skin flakes on your hair, hair, eyebrows, and shoulders
- Itchy scalp
- Crusty or scaly scalp (commonly called cradle cap in infants)
Symptoms can become more severe when you’re stressed, exposed to cold weather, and during dry seasons.
Fortunately, symptoms of dandruff can be addressed with prescriptions and medicated shampoos that target the scalp, helping to control the itching — and the flakes!
Types of Dandruff
Dandruff isn’t just a result of dry skin, in fact, there are several different types of dandruff. Being able to identify which type of dandruff you have can help you and your doctor develop the best course of treatment.
Dry Skin Dandruff
This is the most common type of dandruff. This type is usually present during colder months when the air is drier.
This type of dandruff is caused by an accumulation of oil on the scalp, known as sebum oil. Generated from the scalp glands, the oil can lump together with dead skin and create itchy flakes. An increase in stress and anxiety can lead to increased sebum oil secretion.
Fungal Malassezia is a natural component found on the skin and scalp that lives off excess oil. This fungus then produces an oleic acid that allows skin cells to clump together, creating white flakes.
Dandruff-Related to Disease
Lastly, some skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema, create excessive amounts of skin cells leading to the scaly and flaky skin cells on the scalp. When these cells mix with sebum oils it can cause dandruff.
